Discussion Papers

  • Commonwealth Government Releases Safe Rates, Safe Roads Discussion Paper

A range of practical strategies to reduce deaths and improve road safety are canvassed in a discussion paper released today by Parliamentary Secretary for Workplace Relations, Senator Jacinta Collins.

The “Safe Rates, Safe Roads” paper, explores options for a national approach to truck drivers’ pay and conditions and safety measures across the industry.

Safe Rates: Safe Roads will inform the Government’s response to the National Transport Commission Report, Safe Payments Addressing the Underlying Causes of Unsafe Practices in the Road Transport Industry, which found a link between road safety and pay rates for truck drivers.

The paper is now available for public comment until the consultation period ends on 28th January 2011. The Department of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations is seeking input from individuals, industry participants and the wider community, as well as state and territory governments, to help guide reform in this important area.
