QTA celebrated 10 years of IWD events this week at their Annual Breakfast event on Wednesday 10th March. With many issues confronting us in the media, the focus was on what action you take and how you Choose to Challenge to make change.
The event featured three inspiring women who are forging ahead to create change. MC for the day, our own Lisa Fraser, set the tone for the day acknowledging the challenges of 2020 but also recognising the fortune of living in a virtually COVID-free country and focussing on the positive way we can influence change.
Kim Ellis Hayes is an award-winning Australian Lawyer, Scientist and STEM Professional who traded her steel cap boots and hardhat for a Spacesuit. In April 2020, Kim was selected to train as a Scientist-Astronaut Florida, and she is now qualified to fly missions for NASA astronautics research and education program. Kim joined us for a virtual Fireside Chat from the US and shared that listening to your inner voice, ignoring the naysayers, and thinking about how you will achieve the vision of your future self.
Naomi Birdthistle, Associate Professor of Entrepreneurship and Business Innovation who shared the importance of personal branding, intentional learning and valuing self- development. Delivering with candour and humour, Naomi shared how growing up within her family’s business in Ireland, shaped her learning journey and instilled a passion for family business and entrepreneurship.
Juanita Wheeler, found of Full and Frank Juanita has over two decades of experience, devising and implementing strategic solutions for a broad range of organisations. Juanita is known for her strategic mind, her ability to inspire, and her trademark style of delivering insights and advice in a manner best described as comprehensive but blunt (or full & frank). For many years, Juanita has been staring down and overcoming challenges in both her personal and professional life to now having her own company and becoming Executive Director of TEDxBrisbane. Juanita is a specialist in the science of presenting and confronted us with some startling statistics on the disparity between gender percentages, pay gaps and the eye watering incidence of females who have died at the hands of their partner. Sharing some thought-provoking strategies to ensure that your voice is heard, Juanita’s powerful message included why it is important to have the skills and capability to convey your messaging so that your voice is heard – in any situation in life be it in the boardroom, lunchroom, home or in public.
