Qld-Toowoomba-Mandatory Detour for Heavy Vehicles-James Street

15 May 2020 5:22 PM | Lisa Acret (Administrator)

TMR is replacing major culverts under James Street at East Creek and West Creek to improve flood resilience. Specific dates, height restrictions and further information will be provided closer to construction.

When do the changes commence? From 22 May until late August 2020 restrictions will be in place for all heavy vehicles (over 4.5 tonnes) travelling along James Street in Toowoomba.  All heavy vehicles (up to and including B-doubles) must follow the signposted detour route along Herries Street or find an alternative HV approved route. Heavy vehicles can continue to use the New England Highway (Ruthven/Hume Streets) and can access it from the detour.

What are the changes (excluding OSOM)? All heavy vehicles, up to and including B-doubles, must follow the signposted detour route along Herries Street, during the works or find an alternative heavy vehicle approved route.  The detour has been mapped on Queensland Globe and the National Heavy Vehicle Regulator (NHVR) Route Planner. Detour map included below.

What are the changes for OSOM loads? The below detour cannot accommodate OSOM vehicles. OSOM vehicles must find an alternative route.

Directional instructions
Westbound Vehicles must turn at the Cohoe and Herries Streets intersection and again at the Herries and Prescott Streets intersection, there will be no other option to turn.
Eastbound heavy vehicles must turn at the James and West Streets intersection, there will be no other option to turn.

ALL HEAVY VEHICLES are recommended to avoid the eastern end of Herries Street during school zone hours.

Will there be curfew restriction?  Yes,B-double curfew applies; travel will only allowed between 8pm and 5am daily.

Other Restrictions:

  • 40km/h speed limit for semi-trailers and B-doubles
  • the detour will not accommodate over size, over mass (OSOM) loads
  • no engine braking is permitted at any time
  • a height restriction of 4.3m applies on the detour
  • trucks must travel as close to the centreline as possible to avoid tree branches along the detour.
Other route options? Heavy vehicles are still permitted to use the New England Highway (Ruthven Street).
