The Department of Transport and Main Roads (TMR) will commence a 12-month trial period permitting access for approved Type 2 road train vehicle movements (from 36.5-metres up to 53.5-metres in length) between Emerald Downs and the Emerald Saleyards via the Gregory Highway (Emerald–Clermont) and Capricorn Highway (Emerald–Alpha).

Any operators wishing to participate in the 12-month trial are required to register an Expression of Interest (EOI) via EOI - Emerald Type 2 road train access trial.

EOI submissions can be lodged from Friday 11 September 2026.

This will provide TMR with the opportunity to engage with operators to discuss the parameters and processes related to the trial, including operational requirements and compliance obligations.

Operators registering for the trial will be required to provide their details, vehicle details and vehicle combinations. Further information regarding participation requirements and permit process will be provided following submission of an EOI.

Compliance

The trial will be closely monitored throughout its duration to ensure safety and operational requirements are maintained. At any time during the trial, should it be determined that the risk of continuing becomes unacceptable, the trial will cease immediately.

Please note - Failure to comply with the trial conditions may result in permits being revoked and participation in the trial being withdrawn.
