FNQ: Gillies Range Road, O'Byrne Street Roundabout - Downing Road intersection

Source: Department of Transport and Main Roads

The Department of Transport and Main Roads (TMR) will be undertaking safety improvements on the Gillies Range Road, Gordonvale between the O'Byrne Steet roundabout and the Downing Road intersection.

The works will involve improvements to signage to enhance safety and visibility, along with pavement marking upgrades to provide clearer lane guidance and enhance driver awareness.

As part of the project, the speed limit on Gillies Range Road will be reduced between Mountain View Quarry and the Downing Road intersection. The first 1.5 kilometres from the quarry will drop from 80 km/h to 60 km/h, with the remaining section dropping from 80km/h to 70km/h. TMR will also install Audio Tactile Line Marking along this section of the Gillies Range Road to alert drivers and improve safety.

The safety improvement works are scheduled to start on Sunday 30 November 2025 and be completed by February 2026, weather and construction conditions pending. Work hours will be 6am to 6pm, with occasional night works between 6pm and 6am, if required.

For the safety of road users and maintenance crews, changed traffic conditions will be in place including temporary speed limit reductions under coordination of traffic controllers and/or traffic signals while the works are carried out.

Variable Message Signs (VMSs) will be in place on the approaches to the work site to ensure motorists are aware of the changed traffic conditions. Changes in dates due to poor weather will be posted on the VMS.

Nearby residents may experience noise associated with the works, such as the sound of trucks and light machinery, and vibrations. The contractor will take all reasonable and practicable actions to minimise impacts and any disruptions to property owners and other stakeholders.

If you required further information about these works, please contact TMR via email at cairns.office@tmr.qld.gov.au or via phone on 4045 7144.
