FNQ: Roadworks - Captain Cook Highway and Florence Street intersection

Source: Department of Transport and Main Roads

The Department of Transport and Main Roads (TMR) is undertaking safety improvements at the Captain Cook Highway (CCH) and Florence Street intersection, Cairns.

The project is part of the Queensland Governments Safer Roads Sooner (SRS) program. The SRS program aims to improve safety across the state-controlled road network, with project sites selected based on identified safety concerns.

The works will involve implementing controlled right-turn movements at the intersection to improve safety. This means motorists can turn right only when the signalised right-turn green arrow is displayed.

To improve traffic flow, the right-turn lane on the northbound side of CCH and the left-turn lane on the southbound side will be extended. To make space for these extended turning lanes, parking arrangements will be adjusted. Angled parking on the southern right-hand side of CCH will be converted to parallel parking, and parking spaces on the southern left-hand side will be removed to allow for the increased lane capacity.

The works will be carried out as a combination of day and night works between 6 am to 6 pm and 6 pm to 6 am, and are expected to be completed in mid-December 2025, weather and construction conditions permitting.

For the safety of road users and maintenance crews, changed traffic conditions will be in place while the works are carried out, including temporary speed limit reductions and single lane operation when required, under coordination of traffic controllers or traffic signals.

Road users should expect delays and plan their journeys accordingly.

Nearby businesses may experience noise associated with the works, such as the sound of trucks, light machinery, and vibration. The contractor will take all reasonable and practical actions to minimise impacts.
