NQ: Charters Towers to Hughenden | Flinders Highway | Reconstruction works

Source: Department of Transport and Main Roads, Heavy Vehicles Unit

The Department of Transport and Main Roads (TMR) advises road pavement rehabilitation works will soon commence near Warrigal Creek bridge on the Flinders Highway, 124 km west of Charters Towers.

This section of the Flinders Highway was damaged as a result of a severe weather event in early 2025.

The work will be delivered at two locations, the first is 4km east of Warrigal Creek bridge, and the second is 2km west of Warrigal Creek bridge. The works will include placing new pavement material, insitu stabilisation works and sealing works.

Date of works

  • 17 November 2025 till 19 December 20256.30am to 5.30pm.

What to expect during the works

  • Partial lane closures and contra flow traffic movements will be in place during the period of construction. Traffic controllers will be in place managing traffic control movements throughout the hours of works, with temporary traffic lights managing traffic out of construction hours.
  • Speed restrictions and short delays should be expected, plan your journey by allowing for additional travel time.
  • Priority will be given to emergency services vehicles.
  • Some out of hours works and night works may also be required. Where this is the case, information will be posted on QLDTraffic.
  • Wide load restrictions will also be in place. Heavy vehicle operators with loads three metres wide or greater, are required to provide notification at least 24 hours prior to anticipated time of arrival to allow for heavy equipment and other infrastructure to be cleared. Failure to give advance warning will result in travel delays.
  • Temporary speed restrictions and traffic management signage will be in place until the pavement sealing and asphalt works are completed

The recovery works are jointly funded by the Australian and Queensland Governments through the Disaster Recovery Funding Arrangements (DRFA).
