Road Conditions FNQ: Mulligan Highway and Bilwon Road intersection upgrade

Source: Department of Transport and Main Roads

The Department of Transport and Main Roads (TMR) is about to carry out upgrade works at the Mulligan Highway (Mareeba – Mt Molloy) and Bilwon Road intersection.

The $5.6 million package of works is part of the state-wide, $511.5 million Road Safety Program 2023-2025, which is jointly funded on a 50:50 basis by the Queensland and Australian Governments.

The works will involve installing turning lanes on the Mulligan Highway into Bilwon Road to improve safety at the intersection.

The works are expected to start on 9 September 2024. Crews will be onsite from 6 am - 6 pm, Monday to Saturday. The works are expected to be completed in late-January 2025, weather and construction conditions permitting.

For the safety of road users and maintenance crews, changed traffic conditions will be in place including temporary speed limit reductions, and single lane operation under coordination of traffic controllers and/or traffic signals while the works are carried out.

Nearby residents and businesses may experience noise associated with the works, such as the sound of trucks, light machinery, and vibrations while the work is carried out. The contractor will take all reasonable and practicable actions to minimise impacts.

During the final stages of works intermittent full closures of the road may be required at times to carry out the works. Road users can expect delays of up to 15-minute periods during the full closures. Road users should plan their journeys accordingly.

Variable Message Signs (VMS) will be in place on the approaches to the work site to ensure motorists are aware of the changed traffic conditions. Changes in dates will be posted on the VMS.
