Road Condtions Update-FNQ-Kuranda Range-Barron River Bridge Update 10/6/24
Investigations in the past two weeks have confirmed the Barron River bridge at Kuranda is safe for single-lane traffic up to 42.5t.
Inspections on the Barron River bridge at Kuranda in May 2024 identified an issue with some Macalloy bars. The Macalloy post-tensioning bars were retrofitted to provide additional strength after the bridge opened to traffic in 1963.
From 10 June 2024, the crew will recommence inspections and carry out works to protect the Macalloy bars. These works are expected to be completed in late June 2024.
The Department of Transport and Main Roads will inform you if the current traffic conditions on the bridge (single-lane operation and 42.5t load limit) will change.
The planning study for a long-term solution for the Barron River bridge is progressing as quickly as possible and expected to be completed in late 2024.
Detailed design and construction of a long-term solution are currently unfunded.
