The Department of Transport and Main Roads would like to advise you that works have started on a new rest area on the eastern side of the Bruce Highway next to the Curra interchange (north of Gympie).

This project is part of a $300 million early start package under the jointly federal and state funded $9 billion Bruce Highway Targeted Safety Program (BHTSP).

The new $9 billion program focuses on improving sections of the highway with the poorest safety record, delivering key safety treatments including installing wide centre line treatments (which includes road widening and audio tactile line marking), pavement strengthening, overtaking lanes, rest areas, improving intersections and widening narrow structures.

The new rest area will help road users manage fatigue by providing a safe place to stop, rest and refresh on their journey. It will include parking for up to 25 cars, including dedicated disability spaces, capacity for 16 semi or B-double trucks, toilet facilities, picnic shelters with tables and disability access, and an off-leash dog area. RoadTek has been appointed as the contractor to construct the new rest area, with works expected to be completed by mid-2026 (weather and construction conditions permitting).

Once operational, the new Curra rest area will replace the existing facility in Gunalda, located 8km to the north, which will be permanently closed and the land restored.

Other fast-tracked projects under the early start package will be progressively rolled out this year.

Motorists are advised to download the QLDTraffic App for up-to-date traffic information and to plan their journey.
