Action needed to fill job roles now

Featured in Big Rigs - Driving Transport 2.0

While road infrastructure will be challenged by volume, the road freight industry continues to be challenged by a lack of people to resource their businesses.

The road freight industry is in urgent need of an injection of experienced heavy vehicle drivers to address the ongoing driver shortage. A viable job ready employment program that will ensure the road freight industry has the capability to meet the future growth and demand of road freight movement in Queensland needs to be funded by government.

While we commend the government for approving the Heavy Vehicle Driver Apprenticeship in Queensland and providing a formal pathway for drivers to train, this is a more longer-term solution to a problem that needs addressing now.

REGISTER NOW: QTA ER Road Freight Industry Focus Group 29/9

Following their election, the federal government has taken steps to change the employment relations framework across all industries.

So far, the Government’s consultation process has involved the National Jobs Summit (1-2 September) and the Road Transport Roundtable (29 August). A focus of the roundtable was the introduction of a new independent body to set industry safety standards, acknowledging the mistakes of the RSRT. A focus of both meetings includes finding ways to address the issues of insecure work while acknowledging the need for flexible models of business operation in a competitive market.

All QTA members are invited to attend the Third Quarter QTA ER Road Freight Industry Focus Group, to discuss the content and outcomes of those meetings and what they will mean for the industry.

The business owner’s flood survival guide: how to prepare

With the Bureau of Metereology declaring the third La Nina is officially under way, above average rainfall is likely to return to northern and eastern Australia by early to mid-spring. With heavy rain comes the risk of flooding so people in low-lying areas may be well advised to prepare their flood response early.

Floods are unpredictable and potentially very dangerous, damaging infrastructure and cutting off essential services, as well as causing serious damage to property and threat to life. Never ignore flood warnings. Any kind of water source may flood due to inundation from heavy rainfall or high tides.

Having a plan and knowing what to do may significantly limit damage and decrease recovery time. With the exception of flash floods you should have time to take pre-emptive action when flood alerts are broadcast.
