Key changes to telematics requirements. Are you ready?

1. Ask your telematics provider to audit your telematics devices.2. If your devices are not 4G compliant, speak with your application service provider about upgrading your fleet. A list of 4G compliant TCA approved telematics devices is.3. Don't delay. Commit to a rollout schedule with your provider to ensure you remain compliant after the 3G shutdown.

Are you are a heavy vehicle driver or transport operator who uses telematics devices to unlock productivity or access benefits? Some significant changes are coming that you need to be aware of.

Closure of the 3G internet network - What’s changing?

Telcos across Australia are closing their 3G networks:

  • The Vodafone network shut its service in December 2023.
  • The Telstra network will close on 30 June 2024.

Target workload perceptions to boost wellbeing

Article from OHS Alert 21/3/2024

Some high physical and mental workloads can be unmodifiable and lead to poor health outcomes, but altering direct and indirect factors can influence a worker's perception of their workload, facilitating their wellbeing, researchers say.

They found from a study that what matters most to workers' outcomes is not the actual workload but how it is perceived.

High workloads often result in musculoskeletal conditions, stress, anxiety and burnout, as well as poor job performance, counterproductive job behaviours and workforce dropout, the study notes.

In some organisations, like military groups, and under some structures like shift work, certain workloads are unmodifiable due to organisational demands, it claims.

But by modifying certain factors like training and recruitment arrangements, workloads otherwise perceived as high can be seen as less demanding and less taxing, the study says.

Wickham Freightlines promotes road safety around heavy vehicles with QTA MAIC Safety Trailer Partnership

In partnership with the Motor Accident Insurance Commission (MAIC), the Queensland Trucking Association Ltd (QTA) with the strong support of QTA Member Wickham Freightlines, put the striking ‘one barramundi, two barramundi, three barramundi’ b-double combination on the road last year.

Supporting MAIC’s safety campaign to increase public awareness of the dangers of tail gaiting, this striking trailer set was put on the road as a travelling billboard. Promoting safe travelling distances to motorists, counting out these three barramundis’ equates to about 3 seconds.

If you are interested in having a set of your new trailers branded with a safety or health and wellbeing message, please contact Lisa to express your interest in the next project.

Article from Trailer Magazine 22/3/24

Wickham Freight Lines is advocating for better on-road practices around heavy vehicles by promoting simple safety measures that drivers can follow.

For Wickham Freight Lines, safety is at the forefront of its operations.

Wickham Freight Lines Training Manager, Adam Young, told Trailer it is the company’s number one priority.

“It’s built into our visions and values, and it is promoted to all the staff that work here,” he said.

“We try and make sure that when employees start, no matter what their background is, they have an understanding of safety and the laws in the industry.”

Based in Warwick, Queensland, Wickham’s maintains a fleet of around 530 trailers which feature a plethora of safety features including digital weight scales, Electronic Braking Systems (EBS), standard guide lights, reflectors, satellite tracking devices and reverse sensing lights.

The fleet is primarily made up of refrigerated singles, B-doubles and pocket road trains which travel up and down the Pacific Highway between Brisbane and Sydney, and along the Hume Highway between Sydney and Melbourne.

In hopes of reducing accidents and creating safer roads for everyone, Wickham Freight Lines displays several safety messages on its trailers throughout these corridors.

Its main tip encourages drivers to keep a three-second gap when driving behind trucks by counting, ‘One barramundi, two barramundi, three barramundi.’

Do you have an interest in the Future Transport Workforce?

Development of a national Workforce Plan for each of our key industries is central to the Industry Skills Council role and critical to to build a world class supply chain workforce.

Each Plan sets out the workforce development challenges and opportunities facing the industry, and serves as a roadmap for the future by identifying what industry, the national skills system and governments need to do to build an agile, highly productive and resilient workforce.

With no single stakeholder having the resources or remit to effect the volume of change required, these Plans are essential to establishing a common vision, clear roles and a way forward.

ISA have purposely prepared a separate Workforce Plan for each industry to optimise their relevance to stakeholders, and to ensure that they are short in length and sharp in focus.

These draft Plans are the result of significant stakeholder engagement, combined with qualitative and quantitative research, and guided by the direction and leadership of each industry’s Strategic Workforce Planning Committee.

The deadline for responses is the close of business 5 April 2024 AEDT.
