TMR advises they are introducing new technology to improve safety on the Gillies Range Road where it intersects with Fox Rd, Wrights Creek Rd and Russell Pocket Rd.

What to expect

The rural intersection activated warning signs system temporarily reduces the speed limit on the Gillies Range Rd from 100km/h to 80km/h for about 300 metres when:

  • A vehicle on one of the side roads intends to turn onto the Gillies Range Rd
  • A vehicle on the Gillies Tange Rd intends to cross the main road to enter one of the side roads.

The system uses in-road sensors, radar and cameras to detect vehicles in these situations, then triggers variable speed limit signs on the Gillies Range Rd. Once the intersection is clear, the speed limit returns to 100km/h.

Reducing the speed limit by 20km/h will:

  • Give more opportunities for vehicles to safely turn onto and off the main road from and to the side roads
  • Improve reaction time for drivers to avoid crashes
  • Reduce the severity of a crash if one does occur.

This method - only reducing the speed limit when turning traffic is present - has been shown to have greater impact than a permanent speed reduction, with some drivers ignoring static signage over time if they do not experience the crash risk.

TMR has commenced installation of the required technology and expects to activate the system by mid April 2026.
