Road Conditions (04 September, 2026)

Source: TMR

TMR advises that construction works will soon commence on a heavy vehicle rest area, located 3km south-west of Homestead, on the Flinders Highway.

The construction of a purpose-built heavy vehicle rest area near Homestead will enhance safety for heavy vehicles travelling on the Flinders Highway, one of north Queensland’s most important freight corridors. The rest area will give heavy vehicle drivers a safe, dedicated place to stop and rest, helping them manage fatigue on long journeys.

Works will occur

  • 8 September 2026 through to 31 March 2027

  • Monday to Sunday (excluding public holidays) between 6 am and 6 pm

  • Works will be completed in a ten days on / four days off working cycle and works are subject to weather conditions and construction progress

The new rest area will:

  •  be situated on the left side of the highway heading west

  • provide parking for up to four multi-trailer (Type 2) road trains
  • encourage drivers to stop, rest and reset in a safe, purpose-built facility
  • help reduce fatigue-related crashes on the Flinders Highway
  • include shelter, refuse bins, drinking water and accessible toilet facilities
  • feature solar lighting to improve safety and security
  • include water tanks, with one available for use by emergency services if required

What to expect during construction

  • advanced warning signs and visual messaging boards will be in place on approaches
  • to the work area, notifying road users of the changed conditions
  • short-term traffic restrictions may be required near the highway alignment, including temporary traffic signals and reversible traffic flow
  • speed restrictions will be in place throughout the construction zone
  • during hours of construction, the use of heavy machinery and truck movements are required
  • TMR encourages motorists to follow all posted signage and drive with care through the area.
