FNQ: Captain Cook Highway - TC Jasper Recovery Reconstruction Works

Source: Department of Transport and Main Roads (23.05.2025)

Lane closures, night works and night closures

Coinciding with the end of the wet season, the Department of Transport and Main Roads (TMR) will expand the extent of reconstruction works on the Captain Cook Highway between Buchans Point, Ellis Beach and Yule Point, Mowbray.

This will involve:

  • additional traffic control measures
  • night works
  • night road closures.

Additional traffic control measures and night works will be more prevalent in the coming weeks.

There may be some extended delays as machinery and crews move through sites during the night works.

TMR traffic control measures are designed to minimise delays for road users.

TMR can confirm, no imminent night closures are scheduled for May or June.

TMR regularly review traffic control arrangements and the need for road closures throughout the reconstruction project to minimise the impacts on road users as much as possible and ensure the road is open where the scope of works allow it.

Where scheduled night closures are required TMR will provide advance notice.

Road Closure of Ironman Event

Due to the Cairns Ironman event, numerous road closures will be in place during the day on Sunday 15 June 2025 including the Captain Cook Highway.

For information on these closures please see the Ironman traffic impacts page.

Damage Sites

There are more than 80 geotechnical sites requiring repairs along Captain Cook Highway.

Priority Cyclone Jasper reconstruction sites are mapped below.

These maps only outline complex geotechnical works where landslips and erosion have occurred. Currently there are 32 major sites and seven moderate sites, with minor sites making up the rest of the damage.

Reconstruction sites range from as small as just one metre wide with some sites requiring hundreds of metres of repairs.

In addition to the below mapped slope stabilisation works, there are extensive pavement, guardrails, signage, drains and culverts that require repairs as well as extensive revegetation works that will take place along the length of the highway.

Progress of works

Recent and upcoming works on Captain Cook Highway include:

  • Ongoing shotcreting at a downslope site, 1.3 kilometres north of Turtle Creek Beach.
  • Soil nailing continues on two other down slopes north of Turtle Creek Beach:
    • A major damage site about 80 metres north of the beach
    • A moderate damage site 1.4 kilometres north of the beach.
  • Lane closures north of Ellis Beach are allowing for ongoing pre-construction works.

Frequently asked questions

What can I expect driving through work sites?

Changed traffic conditions including reduced speed limits, single lane closures and manual and long-term traffic control will be in place for the duration of the works.

Variable Message Signs (VMS) will be in place on the approaches to the work sites to ensure motorists are aware of the changed traffic conditions.
