FNQ-Captain Cook Hwy reconstruction works

Road Conditions (02 February, 2026)

TMR advises reconstruction works recommenced Monday 5 January 2026.

As at the start of 2026:

  • over 40 geotechnical sites have been repaired along the Captain Cook Highway
  • 23 of the completed sites were within just a 2km stretch of road near Turtle Creek Beach. Works are ongoing at other sites in this area.

Pay attention around work sites, drive to the changed conditions and obey all signage for your safety and the safety of roadworkers and other road users. 

Progress of the works Ellis Beach to Wangetti south 

  •  Works have recommenced at geotechnical sites along the single-lane traffic control section.

  • Works underway include the drilling of anchors for debris flow barriers and the installation of concrete footings. 
  • Two debris flow barriers have been completed as at late 2025.
  •  Current traffic control requires a 24/7 single-lane section to the north of Ellis Beach which includes the overtaking lanes.

Progress of the works Rex Lookout to Turtle Creek Beach 

  • Works have recommenced at:
    • the major downslope site 750m north of Turtle Creek Beach
    • a number of upslope sites including one just north of Rex Lookout under single-lane traffic control have been descaled and prepared for rock bolting works. 
  • Culvert and draining repairs are underway at several sites.

Traffic control includes:

  • 24/7 single-lane traffic control at the northern end of Turtle Creek Beach

  • daytime single-lane traffic control north of Rex Lookout.
