NSW: Changed traffic conditions on the Great Western Highway detour route

Road Conditions (23 April, 2026)

Source: TfNSW

Drivers are reminded of delays on Chifley Road and Darling Causeway while work is carried out to ensure the detour for the Great Western Highway closure at Victoria Pass remains safe and resilient.

Work is being carried out at night to minimise impacts to traffic.

Drivers using the detour during night work hours should allow for an additional 45 minutes of travel time.

Core work and drilling will be carried out for the remainder of the week at night between 8pm and 5am on Main and Mort Street, Lithgow. This work will create delays of approximately 5 minutes.

Work at Scenic Hill will take place until Thursday 30 April between 8pm and 5am and will see traffic held for up to 20 minutes.

Ongoing heavy patching, re-laying asphalt, and refreshing line markings will take place along Chifley Road and Darling Causeway. These works are likely to cause combined delays of up to 10 minutes.

Please exercise extra caution and follow the directions of signage and traffic controllers.

Please note, the detour is suitable for:

  • PBS vehicles up to a maximum of 20m in length which pass PBS level 1 low speed swept path requirements, and have a minimum startability performance of 13.2% for eastbound access

  • Class 2 vehicle carriers up to 21.4m in length (due to a loaded vehicle overhang) which pass PBS level 1 low speed swept path requirements, and have no permitted additional mass i.e. no startability issues.

Restricted access heavy vehicle operators who are unable to travel on a Notice Network are advised to apply for an amended permit via NHVR Go. Please note that Class 1 Oversize and/or Over Mass (OSOM) vehicles and Special Purpose Vehicles (SPV) cannot currently be accommodated* on the Chifley Road/Darling Causeway detour route. *Exceptions may be made for OSOM or SPV vehicles with an origin or destination within the detour route only - these vehicles move under escort by TfNSW and are assessed on a case-by-case basis.

Unless specified otherwise, operators of Class 1,2 & 3 vehicles travelling under a Notice must consult their relevant enforceable network map to confirm a suitable approved alternate route.

Operators of Class 1, 2 & 3 vehicles travelling under a Permit must not travel off the approved route listed in the permit unless an updated permit is obtained from the NHVR.
