Lane closures along Captain Cook Highway for inspections and surveys

From 9 September until 20 September, Transport and Main Roads will be completing Cyclone Jasper site monitoring and investigations along sections of the Captain Cook Highway between Pebbly Beach and Ellis Beach.

During this time, for the safety of road users and crews, further sections of the road will be subject to temporary single lane traffic control from 9am to 3pm.

These works are required as part of pavement damage investigation and geotechnical investigations for the future repairs of multiple landslips along the Captain Cook Highway.

Investigating these sites now will assist TMR to move into a future program of works more easily from the high-priority repairs phase at major landslips sites to these lower priority repair works.

Due to the nature of the surveying and geotechnical investigations required these cannot occur during the evening. Lane closures are anticipated to create up to 15-minute delays along the Captain Cook Highway.

TMR is in the process of finalising the designs and engaging suitable qualified contractors that can complete the long term and complex, geotechnical, pavement and other restoration construction works needed along the Captain Cook Highway to restore it to its pre-cyclone function.

Disaster recovery is a long-term process, involving an extensive program of works and complex solutions for range roads that wind through World Heritage rainforest.

TMR understands that traffic control sites can be an inconvenience, we thank road users for their continued patience as we work to repair Far North Queensland’s roads.

Road users are reminded, when approaching roadworks, to turn hazard lights on when at the end of the queue as a warning to approaching drivers.

The recovery works are jointly funded by the Australian and Queensland Governments through the Disaster Recovery Funding Arrangements (DRFA).
