SEQ: Full Closure of Story Bridge over Christmas period

Brisbane City Council has advised the Story Bridge will be fully closed to traffic for up to three weeks over the Christmas and New Year period while major waterproofing and resurfacing works are undertaken.

What to expect

The closure will be in place from 1am Sunday 27 December 2026 until 5am Monday 18 January 2027, affecting the Story Bridge southern approach at Kangaroo Point and sections of the Bradfield Highway, including the approach to the Story Bridge from Main Street.

During the closure, access across the bridge will be limited to emergency services vehicles responding to urgent incidents.

The works will involve removing more than 8,200m² of road surface, cleaning and repairing sections of the concrete bridge deck where required, installing new waterproofing, laying a new road surface and reinstating line marking. Council will also use the closure to undertake other bridge renewal works.

The closure has been scheduled during the Christmas school holiday period, when traffic volumes are typically lower. However, heavy vehicle operators travelling through Brisbane should factor the closure into journey planning and allow for changed traffic conditions and potential delays on alternative cross-river routes.

Council advises motorists to plan journeys in advance using the QLDTraffic app or QLDTraffic website. Navigation services including Google Maps, Waze and Apple Maps are also expected to direct motorists via alternative cross-river routes during the closure.
